Overview
Explore Your Options with Confidence. In the College of Arts and Sciences, our Exploratory/Undecided program gives you the freedom to explore different fields of study through engaging introductory courses and electives. Along the way, you’ll strengthen your critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills.

You’ll discover your strengths, talents, and interests—and how they connect to real career opportunities. With small class sizes, your professors will get to know you, support your journey, and help you choose a major and career path you’ll truly enjoy and feel passionate about.

Discover What Inspires You

Students and Faculty at FYS Symposium
In your very first semester, you’ll take a First-Year Seminar (FYS) course on a topic that sparks your curiosity. Recent seminars have explored themes like Speed Jigsaw Puzzling, Economic Inequality and Psychology, Self-Care for Success, Storytelling, Popular Culture and Identity, and Social Media: Booming or Busting Our Society?

You’ll dive into these topics in a small-group setting, working closely with classmates and professors from across the College. It’s a fun, supportive way to explore your interests, make connections, and start shaping your path at UHart
Students in classroom.
As part of your first year, you’ll take a 1-credit course designed to help you explore your options and plan for your future. In this class, you will:

  • Discover potential majors and minors in the College of Arts and Sciences—and across campus
  • Connect with department chairs and alumni to see how different majors lead to a wide range of careers
  • Identify your own strengths, values, interests, and skills, and learn how they can guide your academic and career choices
Student in Center for Student Success
From day one, you’ll have a dedicated first-year advisor in the Center for Student Success. They’ll guide you to helpful campus resources, introduce you to programs that spark your interest, and provide one-on-one advising to help you connect your passions and career goals with the right academic major.

Explore Internship Opportunities

Student and staff in career studio.

Through the Allan Center for Career and Professional Development, along with support from faculty and advisors, you’ll gain access to internships that let you explore industries, test out career paths, and discover what excites you most. These real-world experiences help you identify majors that connect to careers you’ll care about.

By sophomore year, you’ll be ready to choose your major with confidence. As a junior and senior, you’ll continue building hands-on experience and career readiness—applying classroom knowledge in real-world settings while developing essential skills like networking and interviewing.

I had no real idea where my educational journey would lead me. I felt the need to just decide on something just so I could get over what I thought was keeping me back. This was until I had a meeting with one of my academic advisors. He told me how college is not a race to the finish line, but rather an experience you tailor for yourself.
