Douglas McCrory has enjoyed a long-term career as a Connecticut State legislator and noted educator. He is a member of the Connecticut State Senate, earning the seat in a special election this year. Before that, McCrory spent 12 years as a member of the Connecticut State House of Representatives.
Marking more than 20 years as an educator in the Hartford Public Schools system, McCrory began his teaching career at Sarah J. Rawson Elementary School. He later served as vice principal at Lewis Fox Middle School, vice principal at Weaver High School, and since 2009, has worked for the Capitol Region Education Council (CREC).
McCrory teamed with fellow teacher and alumnus Sadiq Ali ’76 to found the Benjamin E. Mays Institute, which emphasizes positive self-esteem through the use of a curriculum infused with African-American history and themes.
A former member of the University of Hartford men’s basketball team (1993–96), McCrory has shared his love for basketball by coaching young people in Hartford’s North End Little League and at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Hartford.
McCrory earned a bachelor’s degree in economics and finance in 1988 and a master’s degree in business administration in 1995, both from the University of Hartford’s Barney School of Business. He holds a second master’s degree in education from Fairfield University. McCrory lives with his wife, Foye Smith, and their son in Hartford.
