Andrew Day ‘24, graduated this past January with a full-time job offer already in place. While at UHart, he majored in business analytics and managerial economics, with a minor in international business. The company he interned at extended a full-time job offer, allowing him to begin his professional career immediately after graduating.
Andrew’s first internship was at WMGNA, a one-stop shop wealth management group. During his time there, he learned about Tax-Out Financial Solutions. “It was a positive experience that allowed me to apply what I learned in my economics classes to a real-world experience,” Andrew says.
His second internship was at Penstock, where he collaborated with the ClearFile Team, working with insurance companies on the regulatory side of health care. Not only did this internship lead to a full-time job offer, Andrew learned three important lessons—never be scared to voice an opinion; good communication and working as a team are keys to success; and that what people make of an experience is what they will get out of it.
“My internship prepared me for my future in many ways,” Andrew explains. “It showed me a real-world working environment; how to balance different projects; how to work with clients; how to work and better connect with people; what I enjoy and don't enjoy in a company; and what I want to do with my degree.”
Andrew says that Barney helped him in many ways. He describes the material he learned in classes, attentive professors, and the job/internship events at Barney as being key to his success. He also considers Barney’s extensive array of affiliates and the ability to network with them as a pivotal part of his career development. “The opportunities the school gives you can help prepare you for your future if you make the most of it,” Andrew advises. “The connections and networking opportunities provided by Barney helped him begin his career. Andrew landed his second internship (now a full-time job) with the help of a Barney School alum.
His favorite part about the UHart and Barney experience is how easy it is to meet people and make friends in class. Outside of academics, Andrew was involved in the rugby club from his first year on campus to graduation. He says that joining the club made it very easy to make like-minded friends coming into college. The team also allowed him to develop a great network of alumni connections, which he describes as a great way to find job opportunities.
Andrew credits several Barney faculty with improving his college experience. He says that almost every professor and individual involved with Barney helped make his experience great. He notes that Assistant Dean of Career Ready Programs Celia Lofink helped him every step of the way and was always there—from helping him land his internships to providing career and college advice. Associate Dean Lillian Kamal was Andrew’s advisor and professor, always providing him with great advice and help along the way. Ben Brewer, assistant professor of economics whom Andrew had four courses with, was a “great professor and mentor” who gave him helpful career advice. Overall, Andrew says the people he met at Barney pushed him to do more and find success in his career.
