Sankofa Gathering Hosted by the New Sankofa Affinity Network

Sankofa Affinity Group graphicThe Sankofa Affinity Network will be hosting our first ever Sankofa Gathering on Monday, February 24, from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Shaw Center. Stop by anytime during the event to meet the co-leaders of the Sankofa Affinity Network. Enjoy some snacks and refreshments as you socialize with community members.

The concept of SANKOFA is an Adinkra symbol originating from Ghana. Visually and symbolically "Sankofa" is expressed as a mythic bird that flies forward while looking backward with an egg (symbolizing the future) in its mouth. “Sankofa" teaches us that we must go back to our roots in order to move forward. That is, we should reach back and gather the best of what our past has to teach us, so that we can achieve our full potential as we move forward. Whatever we have lost, forgotten, forgone or been stripped of, can be reclaimed, revived, preserved and perpetuated.

Affinity Networks are voluntary, employee-led and -facilitated networks formed around shared identities, interests, backgrounds, and the common goal of building community and fostering inclusion and awareness in the broader campus community.

Current Affinity Networks:

  •  Amplifying Indigenous Voices
  •  Disability Network
  • International Scholarship, Education, and Engagement (I-SEE) Network
  • Sankofa Affinity Network, an African Diaspora Network
