Kyla DeBenedetto A’24, ’25 will receive her associate degree upon completion of the radiologic technology program this May and plans to return to UHart again in the fall to earn her bachelor’s degree and a certification in magnetic resonance imaging.
Kyla always knew she wanted to work in health care, but she found her calling during a high school volunteer placement at a local hospital. Assigned to the surgical unit, she was introduced to the pivotal role of an x-ray technologist. Witnessing firsthand the crucial function of radiology in patient care, Kyla was captivated by the idea of x-ray as the “eyes of health care.” This experience ignited her passion and set her on the path to pursue a career in Radiologic Technology.
Upon enrolling in the College of Education, Nursing and Health Professions, Kyla immersed herself in rigorous academic coursework and hands-on training. “The Radiologic Technology program prepares its students for their career through utilizing the x-ray lab on campus, clinical experience starting as early as your sophomore year, and being a constant support system in providing knowledge and resources to aid in comprehension,” she says.
Kyla's dedication to her studies paid off as she secured a position at Advanced Radiology even before graduating. Her two years of clinical experience, gained through six semesters of rotations at different radiology sites, played a pivotal role in her professional development. Drawing upon the knowledge and skills acquired at UHart, Kyla now contributes to producing diagnostic images with precision and expertise.
Throughout her journey, Kyla found unwavering support from mentors like Daniel DeMaio, the director of the Radiologic Technology program, and Jay Hicks, the assistant director. Kyla says, “They both have been wonderful educators in the field and significant connections to getting involved within the profession.”
Reflecting on her time at UHart, Kyla fondly remembers traditions like Late Night Breakfast, where she bonded with friends while eagerly awaiting a feast at Commons. She credits UHart's commitment to career readiness across all its schools and colleges for preparing her and her fellow students for success in their chosen paths.
Kyla's involvement in campus organizations such as the Red Key Society and the Hartford Events & Activities Team further enriched her collegiate experience, fostering friendships and creating cherished memories.
As Kyla continues her journey in Radiologic Technology, she offers sage advice to incoming students: “Get involved! College is what you make of it and UHart has more than 100 opportunities for you to find your home. By getting involved, you make friends and memories to last a lifetime.”
