Maria Esposito Frank to Speak on Censorship and Boccaccio's "Decameron" for Humanities Center

The Humanities Center's 2025 Spring Lecture Series on “Banned Books and Censorship” concludes with Maria Esposito Frank professor of English and modern languages, who will give the talk "Radical Censorial Interventions: The Case of Boccaccio’s Decameron” on Wednesday, April 23, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. in the Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies.

Here, Professor Frank will examine how Boccaccio’s 14th-century masterwork the Decameron, a collection of 100 novellas, has been subjected to bans, condemnation and censorship – almost since its appearance – due to content deemed blasphemous, sexually explicit, and critical of the Church.

The spring 2025 lecture series on "Banned Books and Censorship" is organized by Ayelet Brinn, Assistant Professor of Judaic Studies and History, in association with Nicholas Ealy, Humanities Center Director.
