Denise Colburn Gunter '77 is connecting to the University of Hartford through her legacy.
Remembered by Denise as UofH, she thinks back on her time here fondly and appreciates the lasting friendships she made here—especially her first year roomates Cassandra and Anne Marie. Her sense of belonging to and the comminity she built at UHart are what she values most.
As Denise approaches 50 years of being a Hawk, she continues to feel that same spirit of connection today. Recently, she reunited with fellow alumni at a gathering in Atlanta hosted by Senator Halpern, where she met with University of Hartford’s President, Lawrence P. Ward. “The event felt like both a welcome back and a reunion.” Denise recalled. “It was truly rewarding to reconnect and hear about all the exciting developments at the University. I was especially impressed by how much the campus has grown and by the wide range of opportunities now available to students.”
Denise's deep appreciation for her UHart experience, and the friendships it fostered, has inspired her continued giving and generosity. In addition to her thoughtful gifts to the Hartford Art School and the President’s Fund for Reimagining Excellence, Denise has also included the University of Hartford in her estate plans.
Her commitment to giving was inspired, in part, by her husband. When she met her husband, he often spoke about the importance of giving back. Together, they have had many conversations about legacy giving and how it can help strengthen the foundation of future generations. Through these conversations, Denise came to appreciate that generosity takes many forms. “Giving doesn’t have to be purely financial, as small donations can make a big difference, and sharing your time or expertise can be just as impactful,” she said. “Whether its serving on a committee, mentoring students, or supporting programs that build community, every act of giving helps ensure that others have the same opportunities and meaningful experiences we’ve cherished."
When Denise gives to UHart, she feels a deep sense of gratitude from the community. Denise shares that “We often seek out groups to support, but many don’t know how to receive the gift or fail to respond to our outreach. That’s why I’m especially grateful for my continued connection to UHart. It’s rewarding to give where the impact is appreciated, and I look forward to maintaining a lasting friendship with the University community.”
