First-Generation UHart Students Celebrate Their Journey

As the first member of his family to graduate college, Kevin Lopez Giraldo ’22 says he felt some “impostor syndrome” during his time at the University of Hartford. But he found mentors among the UHart faculty and staff who helped him – and inspired him to be that help for others.

Now a student success advisor at American International College, Giraldo returned to UHart for the First-Generation Student Celebration, speaking to members of the class of 2025 about the unique journey they’ve faced.

“As first-generation college students, you've defied odds, navigated uncharted territories, and paved a path not only for yourselves, but for those who will follow,” Giraldo said. “Being a first-generation student means embarking on a journey where the road is often unfamiliar and the destination uncertain. It means carrying the hopes and dreams of your families, who may not have had the opportunity to walk this path themselves.”

Students and their families filled the Gengras Student Union North and South Café for the dinner celebration. The graduating seniors were presented with special “first generation” cords to wear with their regalia during Commencement.

Caitlin Trinh, senior director of alumni engagement, reminded the students that they will shortly be part of an alumni network more than 80,000 strong.

“When you're looking for connections out there in the great wide world,” Trinh said, “please don’t forget that you have a friend who went to UHart. It might be someone you don’t know yet, but it might be someone we can help you get to know.”

Giraldo told the students that their experiences are a testament to their strength and courage in navigating systems not designed with them in mind. He congratulated them for turning obstacles into stepping stones, redefining what is possible.

“The road ahead may not always be smooth,” Giraldo said. “There will be challenges, setbacks, and moments of doubt. But know this: you have already proven that you can overcome anything. You have the tools, the resilience and the heart to navigate whatever comes your way.”
