The multiphase project aims to create a space for students to safely enjoy spending time at the river. Students can often be found reading or relaxing in the area, or exploring academic pursuits, including painting, photography, and even research in the water.
The University worked with a licensed arborist to assess the area, and the initial phase of the project will address invasive species that were found harmful to trees. Work has also begun to remove trees that are dead or no longer healthy, trim trees with potentially hazardous limbs or limbs too close to buildings, and remove brush.
“The fall and winter are the time to trim,” said Matthew Paige, the University’s executive director of facilities. “There will be a plan to enhance some of the cleared areas with native species that will backfill some of the greenery. We are being thoughtful and informed about our approach to flooding management and mitigation along the riverbed as well.”

The scenic area alongside the river is a familiar sight for students and community members crossing the footbridge between the academic and residential side of campus. With its close proximity to residence halls, University Commons, and the Hawk’s Nest, the University and facilities and dining partner Aramark are looking to transform the space with flowers, greenery, chairs, and picnic benches. That beautification work is expected to begin in the spring.
“Creating intentional, accessible, and inspiring spaces helps foster a sense of belonging for students here at UHart,” says Aaron Isaacs, vice president for student success. “Some of our recent campus improvements are needs, like paving a parking lot or a roof replacement. But there are other times we get to be really creative in defining spaces for students to create memories and explore their surroundings. This is one of those opportunities. We are very excited to see this beautiful gathering space take shape.”
UHart has added a number of common spaces in recent years as part of ongoing campus improvements. This month, new lounge furniture will be delivered to several residence halls. Indoor and outdoor dining, as well as a scenic pond, are planned as part of a major renovation of Konover Campus Center this year.
