Biology major Camryn Butera ’22 has been a member of Associate Professor of Biology Paola Sacchetti’s Alzheimer’s Disease research team since her sophomore year. Camryn says becoming a physician is her life-long goal and that Sacchetti has had a profound impact on her.
“I have been doing research with Dr. Sacchetti since my sophomore year and she has helped shape me to become a better researcher, student, and overall person.” Despite the pandemic, Camryn continued research in 2020, which resulted in authorship on a poster she presented last spring at NEURON, a Northeast conference for undergraduate and graduate neuroscience students.
An Honors student with minors in chemistry and psychology, Camryn recently received the Walter Harrison Emeriti Scholarship for academic achievement and service. Camryn was also the recipient of the Junior Regents Honor Award for being one of the highest academically achieving students within the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Dorothy Goodwin Scholarship from the Women’s Advancement office which she says helped her to improve her professional skills and facilitated access to professional women.

Outside of class and the research lab, Camryn is a resident assistant and serves as an ambassador for the College of Arts and Sciences. She is also involved in many clubs dedicated to service and advises incoming students to do the same.
“Classes are super important in college, but they aren’t what makes or breaks your college experience,” she says. Among the clubs she is a member of include Women for Change, Dreams are Real, the Women Against Rape and Sexual Assault, and the Pre-Medical club. Her membership in the Delta Zeta Sorority has led to her participation in many fund-raising events and volunteer work at the American School for the Deaf in West Hartford.
