John Guerrera ’25 is a business analytics and managerial economics major who recently applied his talents as an intern for Barney alumna Stephanie Crudele M’23, M’26 at The Hartford. He chose to pursue this field because he wanted to explore his passion for problem-solving and building transferable skills.
Guerrera completed the personal lines early career leadership development program (ECLDP) at The Hartford, where he worked on data analysis and presentation, used analytical tools to develop recommendations from both quantitative and qualitative information, participated in a structured learning curriculum for career foundation and functional, role-based skills, and networked with leadership. He says building new connections and applying his learned skills from Barney in a professional context were his favorite parts of the internship. The internship helped prepare Guerrera for a future career as he was able to identify and understand his professional and technical weaknesses. He says utilizing campus resources and his coursework at Barney will continue to help him improve in these areas.
Guerrera’s internship supervisor, Stephanie Crudele M’23, M’26, says, “John was a great addition to the product ECLDP at The Hartford this summer. John has a can-do attitude and is thorough about understanding the pieces of all aspects of his work. He gives full attention during meetings to consume the information being said. John took to our internal data systems very quickly and was able to get to analysis work beyond simple data manipulation faster than expected."
John Guerrera ’25, Barney School of BusinessUHart and Barney have provided me an interdisciplinary understanding of business concepts—in addition to a strong network of peers, advisors, and professors—that promotes continuous learning.
Crudele goes on to say, "Throughout the summer, he had multiple opportunities to present to wide audiences, all of which he did an impressive job on. What I appreciated most about John was his eagerness to continue to do more. There was more than one occasion where he had finished his work and asked me if there was anything he could do to help out. On one occasion, I had mentioned building something out in our internal system but that I wouldn’t get time to get to it in the next couple weeks. Without asking, John made a first draft of what I needed and sent it over to me. This was very appreciated and served as the basis for the project going forward.”
Guerrera has also been active back on campus. Not only is he a campus athlete on the men’s golf team, but also a member of the Barney Leadership Council and a Student-Athlete Advisory Committee representative. He says his professors and athletics staff have been extremely helpful and supportive during his time at UHart. Specifically, “Barney Professor Ken Goroshko has been a great resource and was essential in helping me establish connections at The Hartford through the interview process.”
Guerrera’s favorite part about being a UHart student? The community and connections made. “UHart and Barney have provided me an interdisciplinary understanding of business concepts—in addition to a strong network of peers, advisors, and professors—that promotes continuous learning.” He says Barney specifically provided him the opportunity to “exercise my intellectual curiosity and become knowledgeable about the foundations of business.” From a technical lens, he cites analysis techniques and models, and economic theories and equations as broadening his knowledge the most. From a professional development lens, he cites communication skills, relationship building, and time management as career readiness skills he learned. Overall, Guerrera says, he has been able to create a strong network to foster learning and create opportunities.
After graduation, Guerrera plans to jump right into his professional career. Outside of campus, you can find him fly fishing, skiing, and spending his time with friends and family.
