The newly established U-RISE @ UHart training program proudly welcomes its first cohort of trainees. Among them, Amara Agosto, a Biology major, will conduct her intramural research under the mentorship of Cindy Thomas-Charles. Christopher Kokko, another Biology major, will collaborate with research mentor Yingcui Li. Rhodean Shanny Opinya, also a Biology major, will complete her research with Lisa Rastede. Olivia Dossias, a Biomedical Engineering major, will work with research mentor Solaleh Miar.
U-RISE is funded by the National Institutes of Health and aims to promote broad participation in the biomedical research workforce by strengthening research training environments and expanding the pool of well-trained students who complete their baccalaureate degree and transition into and complete biomedical, research-focused higher degree programs (such as PhD or MD/PhD).
The U-RISE @ UHart program is open to juniors majoring in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or biomedical engineering who plan to pursue graduate training (PhD or MD/PhD) and a career in biomedical research. Trainees are provided with up to $30,000 in scholarship, which includes tuition support and a monthly stipend. In addition, they have access to an enhanced training curriculum designed to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge for a successful transition to graduate school.
