Each year, the Hartford Art School has the opportunity to welcome visiting artists for a series of lectures through the Auerbach Lecture Series. This semester, the two lectures will be held in November.
The first talk is presented by Mark Winters, and hosted by the animation and game art department. His talk “From Soup to Nuts: Art Generalists in Games and Entertainment” will be held on Thursday, Nov. 13 at 2:30 p.m.
The second talk is presented by Grace Yasumura, and hosted by the art history department. Her talk “The Shape of Power: Stories of Race and American Sculpture” will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 19 at 3 p.m.
Both lectures will be held in Wilde Auditorium, and are free and open to the public.
About Mark Winters
With more than 20 years in the entertainment art industry, Mark Winters began his career illustrating for tabletop role-playing games such as Battletech, Shadowrun, Dungeons & Dragons, and Magic: The Gathering. In 2014, he joined Wizards of the Coast as an art director, where he helped establish visual direction for worldbuilding across a variety of settings and characters. During his time there, Mark commissioned hundreds of illustrations and collaborated with artists from around the world. Today, he applies his experience in both illustration and direction at Valve Corporation, contributing to the evolving art of video game development.
About Grace Yasumura
Grace Yasumura is the curator at Grounds for Sculpture in Hamilton, New Jersey. Prior to joining Grounds for Sculpture, she served as an assistant curator at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, where she co-curated the exhibition, The Shape of Power: Stories of Race and American Sculpture. She has also served as the project manager for Contemporary Monuments to the Slave Past, a digital archive that investigates how we visualize, interpret, and engage the histories of enslavement through contemporary monuments. She holds a PhD in Art History from the University of Maryland and a BA in Peace and Justice Studies from Wellesley College.
