Philosophy Club Meeting

Join us in Auerbach 320 or online this Wednesday, Oct. 1 from 1 p.m.–2 p.m. for our next meeting of the Philosophy Club as Don Moores discusses the topic of near-death experiences.

Join the meeting online here.

If you are like most people, you have thought about the big questions. Who am I? Is there a purpose in life? Why is there suffering? What will happen when I die? Is there a soul or some aspect of consciousness that persists beyond death? Is there a God or some ultimate principle? Although philosophy has abandoned these kinds of questions since the Enlightenment of the eighteenth century, there is a contemporary source that offers answers. The near-death experience, which has been well studied for 50 years, can offer clarity. Let’s explore this fascinating phenomenon found in numerous cultures across the world throughout time.

Don Moores teaches in the English Department at the University. Among his published works are Mystical Discourse in Wordsworth & Whitman (2006), The Dark Enlightenment: Jung, Romanticism & the Repressed Other (2010), and The Ecstatic Poetic Tradition (2014).

The University of Hartford Philosophy Club has an informal, jovial atmosphere. It is a place where students, professors, and people from the community at large meet as peers. Sometimes presentations are given, followed by discussion. Other times, topics are hashed out by the whole group.

Presenters may be students, professors, or people from the community. Anyone can offer to present a topic. The mode of presentation may be as formal or informal as the presenter chooses.

Come and go as you wish. Bring friends. Suggest topics and activities. Take over the club! It belongs to you! Just show up! - Brian Skelly (bskelly@hartford.edu; 413.273.2273)
