As we approach the end of the semester, it is a good time to remind those within our campus community of our Mission, Civility, and Values statements: UHart Mission, Vision and Civility Statements
Regarding social media and use of anonymous social media apps/Fizz/Yik Yak:
Many of you may be aware of the return of Yik Yak, a social media application that allows any user within a certain geographic radius to post and comment anonymously. We write today to bring attention to the potential for abuse of the application, the harm this application can cause, and to make you aware of resources available on our campus.
Because Yik Yak is a third-party application that allows posts from anonymous users who may or may not be part of our community, it is virtually impossible for the institution to identify specific users and link them to certain posts. Similarly, social media applications like Fizz and Snapchat, have the same potential for abuse and harm to members of our community. Nevertheless, university policies will be enforced to the extent possible.
We are committed to preventing and addressing all forms of discrimination and harassment that affect our campus enviroment. The University of Hartford, in no way condones harassment, direct threats, defamation or other forms of speech that interfere with our students’ access to an education and our employees’ rights in the workplace. We are dedicated in fostering an inclusive learning environment for all members of the community.
The University does not aim to diminish our collective capacity to participate in open and critical academic engagement, discourse, and expression. However, there are more engaging forums than Yik Yak, both in-person and virtually, to discuss challenging topics, question each other’s opinions, and openly participate in dialogue. We encourage anyone who may be using these applications to consider our collective responsibility to support one another.
If you see concerning content on social media, speak up. Do not engage with or share posts that may perpetuate harassment or harm. For some, that may mean you delete the app altogether. We all share a responsibility to care for one another; be an active and positive bystander.
