Join us at this week's meeting of the Philosophy Club this Wednesday, Dec. 3 from 1 p.m.–2 p.m., in-person in Auerbach 320 or online (link below) as UHart alumnus Timothy Dustin Pepler presents, “Boethius and the Promises of Philosophy.”
In this talk, we shall look at how Boethius, in writing his Consolation of Philosophy, uses the ideas of Neoplatonism to show where two philosophical schools of his day, Stoicism and Epicureanism, fall short. Boethius turns to Lady Philosophy to ask important questions about happiness, fate, and the meaning of life, and discovers that these schools cannot fully answer them. Through this dialogue, we shall see how Boethius’s Neoplatonism offers a deeper vision of the human search for goodness and purpose.
Timothy is currently pursuing a Post-Master’s Certificate in Philosophy at Holy Apostles College. Prior to this, he completed graduate work in Theology and History at Yale University, Harvard University, and Andover Newton Theological School (now, part of Yale Divinity School). In his free time, Timothy is an avid homebody who enjoys Renaissance and Baroque music, reading, and pastries.

An ongoing weekly tradition at the University since 2001, the University of Hartford Philosophy Club is a place where students, professors, and people from the community at large meet as peers. Sometimes presentations are given, followed by discussion. Other times, topics are hashed out by the whole group.
Presenters may be students, professors, or people from the community. Anyone can offer to present a topic. The mode of presentation may be as formal or informal as the presenter chooses.
Come live or join online! Invite friends. Suggest topics and activities. Take over the club! It belongs to you!
