Recently, over a dozen music management students visited the New York Chapter of the Recording Academy, providing an inside look at the music industry. The trip was organized by Hartt’s professor of music and performing arts management, Marcus Thomas, and associate professor Mehmet Dede. Thomas also serves as the associate dean for academic innovation at Hartt, while Dede is the chair of music and performing arts management.

During the trip, the students began their day at the Roundabout Theatre Company, where they engaged with staff who provided a behind-the-scenes discussion about the operations and philanthropic aspects of the theatre world. The students got to meet alumna Brianna Savage '18, who provided some inspiration about her career since graduating from Hartt as a performing arts management major. Savage is now senior manager of development operations at Roundabout. After lunch, the students visited the Recording Academy offices, where they met with seven Academy members who shared insights into the recording business and community engagement. During the visit, it was also announced that the New York Chapter would be headlining a showcase for the upcoming Grammy U conference, featuring Mariah the Scientist as the performing artist.

Over the last few years, Hartt has developed a relationship with the Academy that is both meaningful and impactful for Hartt students and the broader community. In 2023, a Grammy Career Day was held at the University, bringing together four high schools from the greater Hartford area for a conference on the business of music and entertainment. Thomas was instrumental in organizing this event, stating that he “hoped to inspire students to learn more about rewarding careers in the music business.”

Furthermore, Dede was selected as a Grammy U mentor last fall—an accolade notable not only for its prestige but also for its rigorous review process. Dede is also a professional member of the Academy. In addition to inspiring Hartt’s students, he will continue supporting the next generation of music professionals through his work as a Grammy U mentor.
