On Sunday, August 2, Facilities will conduct preventative maintenance, transformer testing, and performance testing on the University's main switchgear and 27KV electrical infrastructure.
To complete this necessary work safely, a comprehensive campus-wide power shutdown is required. Because this work is highly dependent on dry weather, a backup date has been established for the following Sunday.
- Primary Date: Sunday, August 2
- Rain Backup Date: Sunday, August 9
- Anticipated Time Window: 7 a.m.–4 p.m.
What to Expect During the Outage
- Campus-Wide Power Shutdown: With the exception of Bates House, all campus buildings will experience a loss of standard electrical power.
- Emergency Generation: Secondary generators will activate in designated buildings. Please note that these generators only support emergency functionality. They will not support standard office outlets, HVAC systems, or general electronic equipment.
- Dana Hall Laboratory Protocols: To protect specialized research materials, external generators are being deployed specifically to safeguard the sub-zero freezers in Dana Hall.
Action Items for Faculty and Staff
To prevent data loss or damage to sensitive electronics, please take the following precautions before leaving campus on Friday, July 31:
- Power Down Electronics: Turn off and unplug computers, monitors, printers, and local lab equipment.
- Clear Refrigerators: Avoid storing perishable items in office or breakroom refrigerators leading up to the weekend.
- Plan Campus Access Accordingly: Avoid scheduling work, meetings, or activities in campus buildings during the maintenance window on Sunday, August 2 (or rain date of Sunday, August 9), as lighting, climate control, and network connectivity will be unavailable.
We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we complete these critical infrastructure upgrades.
