Counseling for Students

At the University of Hartford’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), we focus on your well-being.

Your First Session

Your first scheduled appointment at CAPS will be an initial phone screening. The screening usually takes about 20-30 minutes to complete. We suggest you find a private place to talk. After the screening, CAPS will make our best recommendations for care moving forward.

How Much Does It Cost?

There is no cost to complete a phone screening. If you are referred to CAPS after completing the phone screening, there is also no additional cost for receiving CAPS clinical services (individual or group therapy, for example). This is true for all enrolled student, undergraduate or graduate, full-time or part-time.

If you are referred for off-campus services, you will need to use your health insurance or pay for treatment out-of-pocket.

Are Therapy Sessions Confidential?

CAPS adheres to professional ethical standards and all state and federal laws regarding confidentiality. This means that once you have contacted our office, CAPS is not permitted to disclose any information, including the fact that you are coming to counseling, without your written consent. Records at CAPS are kept confidential and are not part of your academic or medical record. The primary exception to this rule is if you are in danger of causing harm to yourself or someone else. Additionally, there are special considerations for students who are 17 years of age or younger.
