As a double major in music management and vocal performance at The Hartt School, Michael sees himself as both an artist and a strategist. “I chose to double major because I see myself as both an artist and a strategist,” he explains. “My background in vocal performance, artist management, and creative direction—especially in fashion—has shown me the power of blending artistry with business.” His goal? “To manage my own career as a vocalist while also guiding and developing other artists.”

The University of Hartford has given Michael the platform to refine his artistry while learning the business of music. “UHart prepared me to achieve my professional goals by giving me the tools, experiences, and confidence to succeed as both an artist and a leader,” he says. “Through the vocal performance program, I’ve refined my technical skills, stage presence, and artistic expression. Music management courses taught me the business side of the industry—how to promote, market, and strategically grow a career.”

Michael’s UHart experience extends well beyond the classroom. From leading the creative direction of the Black Student Union fashion show to serving as president of Hartford Exclusive, the University’s fashion club, he’s had countless opportunities to create, collaborate, and lead. “Serving as a resident assistant taught me how to build community, manage responsibilities, and communicate effectively—skills that are essential in the music industry,” he says. Studying abroad in Spain also left its mark: “That experience broadened my cultural perspective and inspired me to think globally about my art.”

Hands-on industry experience has been another defining part of Michael’s journey. His internships span organizations like the Hartford Symphony Orchestra, Connecticut Lyric Opera, WHUR Radio, and the Lake Arbor Jazz Festival. “Across these experiences, I created and managed digital content, promoted events, engaged with audiences, and supported live productions,” Michael shares. “Each role gave me hands-on experience in marketing, event coordination, and audience engagement, while also teaching me the importance of adaptability and teamwork.”

Michael’s first music project officially launched on August 14th, marking the beginning of his career as a recording artist. “My goal is to bring all of my mediums—music, fashion, and visual art—into projects and performances that tell stories, celebrate identity, and inspire others,” he says. He’s also committed to helping others along the way: “I hope to mentor other artists and collaborate internationally, creating spaces where creativity can thrive without limits.”

When reflecting on UHart, Michael says his favorite part is the people: “Being around peers and mentors who are passionate about art, music, and self-expression has inspired me to grow in so many ways.” One highlight stands out—the Black Student Union fashion show. “It was incredible to bring together designers, models, and artists to celebrate culture and creativity,” he recalls. “Moments like that remind me why UHart is such a special place for artists like me.”

His advice to incoming students is both practical and empowering: “Embrace every opportunity to explore your creativity and take on leadership roles, even if they feel challenging at first. Surround yourself with people who uplift and inspire you, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. Most importantly, stay true to your unique voice and vision—that’s what will set you apart in the arts and beyond.”

With his artistry, entrepreneurial mindset, and different perspectives and experiences, Michael Love is well on his way to shaping the future of the music and creative industries.
